WHAT IS MUN?

Model United Nations (MUN) is an activity where students role-play as representatives of countries, and simulate UN meetings, where they will discuss, debate and attempt to resolve world issues. This activity is typically held in private and international schools, as well as colleges and universities within their respective MUN clubs or at conferences attended by students from all across the country.

The goal of MUN is the nurturing of critical thinking within students and testing their networking, data extrapolation, debate and technical skills. Through the holistic means of education through MUN, participants become more versatile and utilitarian members of society, as well as strong academic performers.

A MESSAGE FROM THE SECRETARY GENERALS

2020 was a year for the history books. Change - for better, or for worse - rocked the world. From global pandemics, to human rights movements, 2020 was a rollercoaster. However, the issues we faced last year did not disappear at the stroke of midnight. Fear of police brutality still lingers amongst people around the world. While in other regions, urgent medical access due to the COVID-19 pandemic is scarce. Women still face the issue of poverty and their lack of political participation causes an under-representation in government. Apart from that, the social stigma around teenage pregnancies is still a major issue among the youth.

The theme of SUMUNC 2021 is Breakthrough. We as the secretariat believe that in spite of all the challenges we are forced to face, there is a light that shines in darkness. No matter how twisted our world may be, it’s not too late for the youth to step up and make a change. A Breakthrough is needed during these hard times.

SUMUNC 2021 will be that Breakthrough!

Best regards,

Robyn Grace Leo & Kavinarasi Thavanendran

(Secretary-General & Deputy Secretary-General)
